News about the Shelter

On Thursday, January 10, several members of the humane society board of directors met with Linda VanDerLeest, mayor of the city of Geneseo, and several other city employees to finalize the purchase of land where the humane society will build the new shelter. The land is located east of the current shelter, and includes the dog park, the pavilion, and the land between the pavilion and the road to Cole Cabin. The proposed building site will be on the highest portion of the land, and will extend a bit into the woods. The humane society paid the city of Geneseo $38,400 for 4.6 acres of land, which was calculated according to city requirements as being 80% of the appraised value. The humane society intends to keep the dog park open to the public, as well as to those people who want to utilize the pavilion.

John and Carla Edwards have told the humane society that they will provide funding for the shell of the building and the foundation. The building will be a steel Morton building. Plans for the shelter are currently being finalized, and the overall size will be determined by considering the humane society's ability to afford the larger monthly bills of the new, larger shelter. It is hoped that the plans will be completed in the near future, and that construction will begin in the spring.
